>> Rachel: Good morning my friends, I hope you’re not sleepy. For this week on Chompers the topic is POETRY!

Start brushing on the top of your mouth on one side, and make little circles with your brush around each tooth.

>> KIDS: 3, 2, 1 BRUSH!

Poetry is a type of writing. What makes poetry special is that its a way to play with words, and express how you feel in a beautiful way. Poetry is different than PROSE - basically everything you read that isn’t poetry is prose: story books, magazine articles, words on the back of a cereal box -- that’s all prose!

There are LOTS of types of poetry.  People have been writing it for thousands and thousands of years.  And people from almost every place and time have come up with new TYPES of poems.

Switch to the other side of the top of your mouth, and brush the molars in the way back (SFX BELL)

POETRY is what our quiz question is about today!  (SFX QUIZ)

The question is:

Which of these is a type of poetry?

Is Senryu a type of poetry?

Is Pastoral a type of poetry?

Or is Limerick a type of poetry?

Switch your brushing to the bottom of your mouth, pick a side, and make sure you’re making tiny brushes with your toothbrush around each tooth.

You can tell the different types of poetry from each other in a few ways.

Poems have forms (SFX HUH?) -- that is, how they look on a page.

Poems have rhyme schemes -- which is how they do or don’t rhyme.

And poems have subjects -- that’s what the poem is about!

You can tell what type of poetry a poem is by taking a look at its form, rhyme and subject. (SFX WOW)

Switch your brushing to the other side of the bottom of your mouth and give those front teeth a brush too!

So back to our quiz question:

Which of these is a type of poetry?

Is Senryu a type of poetry?

Is Pastoral a type of poetry?

You’ll have to come back to Chompers tonight to hear the answer! Until then,
